Staying safe while online is a necessary element of Internet use. Many people don't think about the hazards that the Internet can bring into their lives. Spouses are vulnerable too. Online con men and cyber affairs happen to adults just as often as children are targeted. Online gambling is a tempting lure to a person with a gambling habit, and a marriage that is in trouble is susceptible to a cyber affair. If a spouse spends a lot of time on the computer when you are away or asleep, closes windows on the computer or shuts the monitor off when you enter the room, chats with or receives emails from a person that you don't know, he or she could be having an online affair. Con men are a class of Internet predators, and are experts at winning a person's confidence and then stealing from that person. A San Jose man was arrested for arranging a meeting with someone that he thought was a 13-year-old girl.  Good thing it was a cop at the meeting place.  James Barany is the band director at a high school and started an online chat session with the “girl” and arranged a meeting in Santa Cruz. OHS Teacher Charged in Internet Sting

Joseph Garner tried to arrange a meeting with what he believed to be a 13-year-old girl for the purposes of sexual gratification.   The Ontario High School teacher was arrested on seven counts of online sexual corruption of a child after contacting the “girl” through MySpace and initiating explicit sexual conversations.  Full Story

Elementary Teacher Caught In Internet Sex Sting

This teacher from Pasco County really wanted to teach the kids something.  He was not just chatting to one but three undercover officers posing as teenagers at the same time.  He was arrested on charges of Internet solicitation of a child.  Joel Matthew Cupp, an elementary teacher, exposed himself multiple times over a webcam to what he believed were kids. Ithaca Teacher, Coach Charged with Sex Crimes

David Strong, a gym teacher and former girls volleyball coach was arrested for using an Internet chat room to have explicit sexual conversations with what he believed to be a 13-year-old girl.  He also used a webcam to send sexual images of himself to the person that he acknowledged was much younger than him. Of course, I am not saying that all teachers are Internet predators.  I personally have some great memories of some great teachers that made a huge impact on my life.  These are just a few teachers that wanted to make a huge impact in children in a way that kids could quite possibly never recover. 

Remember that these are just the Internet predators that happened to get caught in an Internet sting operation.  There are literally thousands more out there quite possibly chatting with your kids.  You need to know what your kids are doing online at all times to keep them safe from these sorts of dangers.
